Birdhouse Books

In his first birdhouse book — The Art of the Birdhouse: Flights of Fancy — Mike Dillon demonstrates how birdhouses can be more than just habitats for our feathered friends. The book features whimsical birdhouse designs that resemble eggplants, dancing teapots, a three-story celestial house painted in different shades of purple and blue. For a more rustic abode, there's a birdhouse built of twigs and adorned with leather braids. There's even an interpretation of a birdbath that uses rough wood boards for the exterior and an old faucet as the perch.

He followed that book with The Great Birdhouse Book: Fun, Fabulous Designs You Can Build, which provides instructions for building 28 of the birdhouses featured in his first book. Each project includes a color photograph and an exploded diagram from all sides. The detailed instructions include listings of required tools and supplies. Mike also supplies a chart with precise measurements — such as for the birdhouse floor and its entrance diameter — for 20 species of birds as well as each species' preferred habitat.
